EGAD AD 2.19  RADIO NAVIGATION AND LANDING AIDS

EGAD AD 2.20  LOCAL AERODROME REGULATIONS

1   Airport Regulations
  1. Aircraft (including microlight aircraft) using Newtownards Aerodrome are to carry third party liability insurance cover meeting or exceeding the appropriate European Directive requirements.

2   Ground Movement

Not applicable

3   CAT II/III Operations

Not applicable

4   Warnings
  1. There is high ground and a lighted obstruction (Scrabo Tower) that infringes the protected surface of the 26 climb-out. There are near-in lamp standards on the Comber Road that may present an obstruction in the event of a late decision to commence a missed approach. Turbulence may be experienced during a missed approach.

Advice: Pilots of aircraft carrying out an approach to Runway 26 should satisfy themselves at or above 300 FT that they can safely land and stop on the runway. In the event of any doubt pilots are advised to commence a missed approach and make an early left turn to avoid the high ground. The pilot of an aircraft attempting to make a landing on Runway 26, who has not established wheels firmly on the ground before crossing the intersection with Runway 21, is advised to commence a missed approach. Once established in the climb an early left turn should be made away from the rising ground.

  2. Pilots landing on Runway 33 should exercise caution on the approach to avoid possible pedestrian and vehicular traffic on the sea wall. Turbulence and windshear may be experienced on approach to Runway 33 in conditions of strong winds.

  3. The aerodrome is frequently used outside the published hours of operation.

  4. Pilots to exercise cautions as different heights and sizes of circuits may be in use simultaneously.

    1. Pilots of Microlight aircraft using the 700 FT circuit to exercise caution when turning base due to potential conflict with aircraft on final.

    2. Pilots of aircraft flying the 1000 FT circuit to exercise caution due to potential conflict with aircraft operating in the 700 FT circuit.

  5. Public road runs at right angles to the approach and under Runway 15 approach path beyond the aerodrome boundary.

  6. Lamp standards (Lgtd with red warning lights and painted with red and white bands) approximately 5 M from aerodrome boundary, 26 FT AMSL, 140 M from Runway 15 threshold.

  7. Vehicles on public road 150 M from Runway 15 threshold.

  8. Model aircraft activity on the aerodrome located at the western hangars. All model flyers will have radio contact on 128.305 MHz and will not operate on active runways.

5   Helicopter Operations

In order to minimise the impact of noise on local residents ALL helicopters operating into or from Newtownards shall obey the following restrictions.

  1. Approaches

    1. Helicopters shall not approach the aerodrome through the sector of the aerodrome traffic zone between the extended centre-line of Runway 21 and the extended centre-line of Runway 26, and helicopters shall not make any approaches to Runway 08. If approaching the aerodrome from the west they shall either route to the north of Scrabo Hill or join the extended centre-line of Runway 03 before the ATZ boundary and thereafter remain to the right of the runway centre-line.

  2. Departures

    1. Helicopters departing from Runway 21 shall ensure that they do not fly west of the extended 21 centre-line until outside the ATZ.

    2. Helicopters shall not depart from Runway 26.

  3. Hovering on the Aerodrome

    1. Visiting helicopters shall not carry out hovering practice at Newtownards without specific prior permission. Arriving helicopters shall route as expeditiously as possible to their planned set down area and shall shut down as soon as possible.

    2. Local helicopters shall take all possible actions to minimise noise impact from hover practice by avoiding hover training up-wind of residential areas.

6   Use of Runways
  1. Runway 26 is available for landing only.

  2. Runway 08/26 is not available to solo students.

  3. Grass Runway 15/33 is unlicensed, for details including dimensions/declared distances contact the aerodrome.

7   Training

Not applicable

EGAD AD 2.21  NOISE ABATEMENT PROCEDURES

  1. Avoid overflying bird sanctuary at Castle Espie.

EGAD AD 2.22  FLIGHT PROCEDURES

1   Circuits
  1. Circuit directions; Runway 03 - RH; Runways 21, 15 and 33 - LH.

  2. Runway 26 is not available for circuits.

  3. Circuit height: 1000 FT AAL. Microlight circuit height for aircraft flying at IAS less than 90 KT 700 FT AAL. Microlight Pilots using the 700 FT circuit to prefix Downwind radio call with ‘Microlight’.
